Hydroxychloroquine is a medication that has been used for the treatment of severe autoimmune diseases and anti-malarial diseases. The medication has multiple risks and potential adverse reactions including; blindness, cardiac problems, and death.
Throughout the pandemic, many countries tried using Hydroxychloroquine for treatment of COVID. The medication was also prescribed for emergency off-label use in the United States in the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. However, the FDA withdrew the recommendation for it’s use to treat severe COVID patients after the international research study, The Soldiarity Study, proved that it did not help treat COVID-19.
Many patients continue to want treatment with Hydroxychloroquine and/or Ivermectin to treat COVID-19. They tend to follow The Frontline Doctors, which was founded by a non-practicing trained physician who has a history as an alarmist. The majority of her medical henchmen are also non-practicing providers. There are only about a dozen or so medical providers who subscribe to their theories. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of thousands of board-certified practicing physicians who practice according to evidence-based medicine which is based on proven scientific research. Patients do not always understand how to interpret scientific medical research. Physicians are trained in medical school how to interpret research studies and make clinical decisions based on all the data. Teleological interpretations do not hold merit in clinical decision making and is not an ethical way to practice medicine.
